Daddy-Daughter Dance and More

Jenna and Dad attended a Daddy-Daughter dance where the little girls dressed as princesses.

One of my favorite times of day is when Heather sits down to play through all the songs she knows. She may be avoiding homework and distressing, but it's 30 minutes of beautiful music guaranteed!

Sariah started this sitting thing. She doesn't want to get all the way on, just her hind section.
Silly Dog.

Our latest Dutch Oven dessert was chocolate/cherry cobbler. Kelly continues to gather and try new recipes. Love it!

Our Piano

We recently changed out furniture in our living room, and between that and the fact that our little girls are adult size now (as well as their friends), oh and we have a huge dog, our living room was becoming a little small. My mom's piano, which we've had for ten years, takes up about 1/3 of the room's space, and we ran out of places to position it to maximize remaining space. Additionally, Heather's progress is warranting a newer keyboard since the keys on our 1920's gem are sticking a bit. It seems to be time to sell the piano.

I had never wanted to put the piano in my home for a few of reasons. First, it was a purchase my mom made when I was a teen that meant very little to me because no one in our house played the piano.  We also couldn't afford the purchase which at a young age I was well aware of.  Fast forwarding to my adult years with two small children and my mom asking for a place to store the piano, and I told her it would no way fit in my small house. Lastly, there was no need at the time for me to have a piano because the girls were not ready to take lessons yet. But when a time crunch came and the piano needed a home, it came here because there was no other place for it.

We were surprised that it fit in the corner which is where we placed it hoping to retain some of our living space. It is a pretty piece of furniture, and our holiday decor has looked really nice on it. Then the girls started lessons not too long after it arrived, and it was very handy for practicing. My mom was able to see the girls begin lessons and learn songs before she passed away which had been important to her.

When my mom passed, we weren't just storing the piano anymore, it had become an inheritance piece.  My sister did not have room for it, so it continued living here until we decided what to do with it. I didn't have brain space while raising my girls to investigate selling an antique piano at that time. It has been a perfect fit for these ten years, better than I had ever imagined.

Back to the present and after doing some research, I posted a listing on Craigslist for what the piano might be worth. Dusting it off and photographing it was an interesting experience--I knew it needed to go, but it meant the end of some great memories of our daughters learning how to play. The very day I posted the listing, I told my neighbor about it asking her to share with friends, and she popped over after work to see it.  She promptly told me she has been wanting a grand and that this would be perfect. We made arrangements for her to buy it after the holidays.  It has been nice not to have to wonder how long it will take to sell, and Heather was excited that it would only be moving down the street where she could pop in and play it if she missed it too much.  Tender mercies.

So for the next few weeks, we will say goodbye to our old friend.  Heather already has the top up and is playing and playing her pieces on it.  It sounds wonderful.  I'll miss that.  Who knew that my mom's purchase that had irritated me in my youth would end up being something I would be grateful for later on?  It has been a well-loved item.

Piano Recital

It was just Jenna performing this year for our family.  Heather's schedule has prevented her from getting to a regular piano lesson and practicing regularly.  Jenna did a great job for the limited practice she put in.  Her teacher and I would LOVE to hear what she could do with some concentrated practice.  Why is it that when a child has a natural talent with something that they often don't like or want to pursue that avenue?  We will press on with our music education and hopefully have great things to report in the future!

Piano Recital

The girls had their spring/summer piano recital.  My friend, and their teacher, Michelle, always does a nice job of presenting her students.  This time the girls had to find a fun fact about their composer to present before they played their classical piece.  Afterward, the kids enjoyed a treat and some visiting time with their friends.

Piano Recital

The girls performed in the annual piano program and hot chocolate recital that Mrs. Holbrook holds for her students.  I love taking pictures of the girls at the piano and seeing how they've grown over the years.  After successful performances, the girls hung out with their friends.  Grandpa was able to attend since he was here early for our Disneyland and Special Persons Day events.

Piano Recital

The girls participated in a successful recital today.  They have a fabulous teacher, and they saw many friends who are also Mrs. Holbrook's students.  These recitals are great learning experiences and although the girls don't really love them, they are learning about the importance of practice and dedication to their craft.  We had a great discussion in the car afterward about what we are allowed to take with us from this life.  We talked about knowledge and our talents going with us and how important it is to work to collect that knowledge so we have much to take with us.  I'm hoping one day my girls will thirst after knowledge and desire to improve their talents.  They have a ton of potential.

Piano Recital

We finally got the tree decorated. Kelly got it up last week and put the lights on it. It has been sitting waiting for me all week, and I finally dug in. I don't know why the task seemed overwhelming? Next year, we're starting after Thanksgiving so we can enjoy it longer.

Tonight was Mrs. Holbrook's Hot Chocolate and Holiday music recital. Jenna and Heather each played two songs, and we gathered with all the students for hot cocoa and goodies afterward. We have lots of friends from Moiola who take lessons, so it is super fun to see everyone.

Piano Recital

Wow. Two posts in one day. I know you're impressed. And hubby, these posts are not about me at all! Woot!

Piano teacher, Mrs. Holbrook, held a summer recital this afternoon for all of her students. These recitals are very low key and not nerve-wracking at all (for the parents). This is the first time Heather did not dress up, although she tried with an up-do and nice shoes. The girl has outgrown all of her clothes, and there was no time to try to find a skirt and matching top in her closet. Jenna heard me prodding Heather to gussy up, and she got dressed all on her own. She did a very nice job.

The girls were fabulous. I love watching them play the piano, Jenna with her nervous perfection, and Heather who puts her book up and never looks at it once. She's so memorized she even knows where to turn the page. It cracks me up. Heather definitely loves the piano more than Jenna does, but we're hoping Jenna will come to love it too.

Piano Recital

Tonight was the recital for Mrs. Holbrook's students. The room was filled to capacity, and the children did a wonderful job! Just scroll down to see all those relieved and excited faces! And I have to mention that sweet Heather got more compliments on her HAIR than her piano performance. Way to look stylish while performing Heather!
