Windy Special Persons Day

Today was Moiola's annual, and last, Special Persons Day. The wind was whipping throughout the program, but the sun was shining in a gorgeous blue sky. I was surprised as the 5th graders came out to start the show at how emotional I became. I've been frustrated and concentrating on strategies that might help save our school and haven't had much time to be sad. Watching Mrs. Haukness play the piano for her kids and realizing that Jenna wouldn't have this amazing 5th grade teacher next year made me sad. Our students, teachers and parents are going to be in mourning the rest of this year while we are making the best of our time together.

The kids were all adorable as usual. Jenna's class sang, "Donde Esta Santa Claus" and "Deck the Halls." Since Grandpa is traveling this week, I was Jenna's "special person" and toured her classroom with her to see the fun things they've been working on. We then had her class party where we made a snowman picture frame ornament and played the gift exchange game. Jenna was so excited that there was a Lego she wanted, and she ended up with it. Her best bud, Sarah, stopped by from next door to say hi and pass out candy canes.

While driving over to pick up Heather after school, we saw a street sign that had blown off and another sign that had splintered and fallen over. We remembered that today was the day that Heather was to fly her Chinese kite, and we were so excited to find out if the wind was good for flying their slightly heavy kite. It was! Max and Heather got it up in the air even though it ended up breaking. We were laughing because only a super-strength wind could have helped get the homemade kites up, and the wind delivered! Here they are dressed up for their Chinese report cover. My Kimono gift Grandpa brought from Japan has come in handy a few times when we've needed some flair from the Orient!

Your schools always do such fun stuff. That is sad Jenna won't be there next year. Glad you had a good time.
